Buy a Town Decal for my vehicle(s)

All personal property taxes must be paid in order to purchase a vehicle decal. Vehicle decals are now permanent and are purchased one time. The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles registration cards that show vehicles are located in the Town of Bowling Green are needed for decal purchase. Replacement decals can be purchased in case of a replaced windshield or other situation requiring a replacement decal for the same vehicle.  Compliant golf carts require a temporary Town Decal and must comply with the current ordinance for inspection, registration, and new decal purchase each year.

Know the costs to live in the Town of Bowling Green

New residents should be aware of the requirement to pay personal property taxes to Caroline County and a lesser amount to the Town of Bowling Green. If you own property in the Town, you must also pay real estate taxes to Caroline County and a lesser amount to the Town of Bowling Green.

Some of the specific costs are as follows:

1. Real Estate Taxes are $0.12 per $100.00 of assessed valuation for the Town of Bowling Green and $0.72 per $100.00 of assessed valuation for Caroline County.

2. Personal Property Taxes are $0.60 per $100.00 of assessed valuation and $3.50 per $100.00 of assessed valuation for Caroline County.

3. The minimum water, sewer and trash rate in the Town of Bowling Green is $127.00 every two months. This figure includes twice weekly trash pick-up.

4. Permanent Vehicle Decals are $25.00 for vehicles and $18.00 for motorcycles.

5. Availability fees for water and sewer are $6000 each. Connection fees are a minimum of $750.00 each for water and sewer (according to how much time and materials are needed to make the connection). There is a $35.00 inspection fee for each water and sewer connection. If all connections are inspected at the same time, only a $35.00 fee is charged.

6. In Town water deposit is $100.00 plus a $15.00 account set up fee.

7. If water is disconnected for non-payment, a $25.00 fee will be charged to have water reconnected.

8. Local Cable Service is provided by Metrocast. The local office number is (804) 633-0271. Their web site is www.metrocast.com.

9. Electrical Service for the Town is provided by Dominion Virginia Power ((888) 667-3000) or the Rappahannock Electric Cooperative ((804) 633-5011) depending on where you live in the Town.

10. Local Telephone Service is provided by Verizon ((800) 599-0193).

11. Internet Service Providers are Verizon, Metrocast, and Bealenet.com.

12. Satellite Service is provided by DirecTV and Dish Network.

Trash pickup is only available to Town residents. Trash is picked up at curbside on Tuesdays and Fridays. You must have your trash container on the curb by 7:00 A.M. on the day of pickup.  Trash containers for residential pick up are supplied by the Town of Bowling Green’s contracted provider when trash service is initiated.

Know the schedule for Town of Bowling Green public meetings

The Town Council regular meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 P.M. and the Planning Commission regular meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 P.M. in the Rappahannock Room of the Bowling Green Event Hall at 117 Butler Street. Board of Zoning Appeals meetings are scheduled as needed. If a regular meeting date falls on a Holiday, the meeting will be rescheduled. Special meetings are announced at a previous regular meeting, in a newspaper advertisement, or posted on the public meeting board in Business Office. Rent the Bowling Green Town Hall for an event

Information regarding the rental of the Bowling Green Event Hall is on the Town’s Web Site. Applications can be obtained at Business Office. Reservations are made with a deposit payment of $150.00 and a signed rental agreement. No reservations are accepted by phone. Available dates and additional information can be obtained by calling the Business Office, (804) 633-6212.

Obtain a Business License

A Business License is required for all businesses operating in the Town of Bowling Green. License fees are due March 1st if you were licensed during the previous year. If not, a Business License Application is required before you can start a business. If you plan to operate a business in your home, you must fill out and submit a Home Occupation Permit Application in addition to your Business License Application.  Forms can be found under Online Forms on the right navigation bar.

Positions are appointed by the Bowling Green Town Council after receiving written letter of interest from the applicant. Appointments are based upon position availability. Applicants must be residents of the Town of Bowling Green. If you operate a restaurant or food service business in the Town of Bowling Green, you are required to collect a meals tax on all prepared food and remit those taxes to the Town of Bowling Green monthly. The Farmers' Market is located next to Union First Market Bank on North Main Street and usually runs from late spring to the Harvest Festival each year.
